Mudhal Murai — Neethane Enn Ponvasantham.

This is my favorite of the album as it is very different from most other raja songs. Also my fav lyrics in the whole album.

The song bolts out of blocks and stays at that pace till the end. Love, Pain, longing, frustration, loss are effortlessly expressed in the song.  Expressing one emotion in a song is difficult for most but for Raja it seems like a walk in the park.

Intro music:
1) Almost all the instruments used in the song are set up at the beginning.
2) it is also sets up of the mood for the melody to start.
3) Notice how similar electric guitar & cello musical idea in the intro are used in the main verse (Pallavi)
4) I’m trying to figure out what the short electric guitar piece emotionally means?  If I play it separately in my head I cannot associate it with any strong mood.  Can you figure out? Let me know.

Main Verse:

1. Melody line is backed by cello and alternated with electric guitar piece.
2. Second part of the main verse builds and ends, giving way to “Neethane En ponvanstham” line
3. Lyrics expresses alternating/diametrically opposite emotions  experienced by the girl because of her lover.

Interlude:
1. Solo violin used to depict her loneliness, longing and feeling of being trapped by love face with obstacles.
2. The interplay of solo and orchestral elements climaxes and ends.
3. Piano notes lighten up the mood for the saranam to express love without coloring it with heavy elements.
4. Piano also sets up the reminiscing and day dream element expressed in the saranam.

Saranam:
1. Explores love without heavy elements and drama. String back at first. Evokes longingness.
2. Heavy strings returns with Oødalil Ponathu Kaalangal line. A sense of loss.
3. Climaxes along with cello and gives way to line — Veyila Mazhaiya Valiya Sugama Ena Nee.  Love filled with frustration.
4. Ends with beautiful Neethane Enn Ponvasantham line.

Main verse repeats.

Simple choices, simple ideas but so powerful. I can tell you simplicity is not easy to achieve and actually very complex 🙂

Saindhu Saindhu analysis

A wonderful song. Raja mentioned NEPV music is a slow poison, this one is definitely a slow poison. The more you listen to it the more you like. Yuvan as a singer is a good commercial choice by GVM and sure to attract more younger crowd.

Main Pallavi (verse)
1. Nice melody. While the main melody identifies the male character. The counter melody by electric guitar could represent the female character. By not verbalize it with female voice, may be the balance of the song is maintained.
2. The electric guitar also evokes the night mood.
3.  Night mood is also evoked in the main tune, electric guitar, sax and by the cello+strings in the 1st interlude.

1st Interlude.
1. Raja chooses to re-setup the night mood in the new setting. Beginning of a dreamy love on a lovely night. Explores sprouting of new love and and prepares the listener for the saranam that follows. All love and Pure love.
2. Four musical phrases with slight variation played by string section.
2. Dominant piano plays two musical phrases and cello completes it each time.
3. Followed by Piano, strings and cello combined play two musical phrases.
5. The structure of the 1st interlude is very similar to the structure of the background music in the saranam that follows.

1st Stanza
1.  Exploration and expression of more emotions (love)
a) En thaayai pola oru pennai thedi —  Piano notes under the lyrics adds a lovely ornamentation.
b) unnai kandu konden oh  — base guitar waterfalls into strings and cello complete the transition into next line.
2. The above idea is repeated for “En thaayai pola oru pennai thedi unnai kandu konden oh”
3.  Azhagaana unthan maakolam athai ketkum enthan vaasal  — Now Piano, strings and base guitar combines together.
4. Kaalam vanthu vanthu kolamidum — background music climaxes to taking the love to new heights.
5.  un kannai paarthaale Mun jenmam povene —   Adding tenderness by removing instrumentation rather than adding more instrumentation.  Only Piano rolls under the lines. Nice touch.
6.  ange neeyum naanum naam  — No heavy ornamentation. Also a nice and cool way to connect to the main verse (Pallavi).

Main pallavi(verse) repeats

1. Saayndhu saayndhu nee paarkum pothu adada hey hey  — The empty musical bar after this line, makes us feel an incompletion or emptiness.
2. Serndhu serndhu nizhal pogum pothu adada hey hey hey hey hey — Sax fills that empty bar,  Now it seem the characters love is more complete. Incomplete love is coming to fruition?

2nd Interlude.

1. Explores exchange of full range of emotions (Love), growth, complication, climax and ends in dark overtones. Foreshadowing the dark times that may befall up on the lovers.
a)  Musical phrases1 repeated twice by sax and strings.
b)  Musical phrases2 is repeated twice with two different strings sections.
c)  Intensified Musical Phrases3 is repeated twice with percussion elements. Climaxes here.
d) Fades slowly into Musical phrase4. This is repeated four times with string backing. Climax is fading real fast.
e) Musical phrase4 is repeated four times with very less string backing —  In full transition into next section.
f)  Gives way to Cello with string backing.  Dark, heavy tones for a romantic song like this. Not a good news for lovers.

2nd stanza repeated with same idea.

Master touch.

1. In the final line the lyrics Aadaa..daa is delayed a bit compared to earlier delivery and a small musical gap is created. In middle of that gap, all orchestral pieces joins together and responds with Aadaa daa. Then yuvan joins the orchestral Aadaa daa and they all end in unison.
2. Aadaa daa almost ends up being the key musical notes of the song. It stands for beautiful, love, lover and combination of these.  A holder for lot of lovely emotions expressed in the song.

In the end, Raja is going for simple love song with simplicity and consistency rather than complexity.

If you decided to go for long drive in the car in the middle of the night. This is a great song to play.
